Malia Obama made a fashionably daring and rare public appearance in Chicago, Illinois on Thursday, June 18.
The 27-year-old filmmaker stepped out with her 25-year-old sister, Sasha, for the opening of the Obama Presidential Center. For the occasion, Malia opted for a light gray blazer with a plunging neckline. She wore the daring top with nothing underneath and paired it with a dark gray miniskirt.
She styled her copper boho braids down in a center part. For her shoes, she opted for matching pointed-toe heels.

Sasha opted for a white off-the-shoulder outfit, which featured a belt at her natural waist. She pulled her hair back and accessorized with chunky earrings.
The sisters were, of course, joined by their parents, Michelle and Barack Obama. Several former U.S. presidents also attended the ceremony, including Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. Their spouses, Jill Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush, were also present.

Before today’s event in the Windy City, Malia’s last major public outing was in 2024, when she attended the opening ceremony of the Deauville American Film Festival on September 6 in France. There, she wore another striking look.
On the red carpet, she donned a checkered-print Vivienne Westwood two-piece ensemble and topped off her look with knee-high black boots. In a rare interview with Paris Match, Malia briefly spoke about her look.

“Vivienne Westwood, queen,” she said. “It’s cool. I don’t know as much about fashion, but I’m happy to be wearing it.”
Malia was at the festival to present her short film The Heart, which she directed and wrote. It also won the festival’s first-ever Young Spirit Award.

“The film is about lost objects, lonely people, forgiveness, and regret,” Malia shared in a video for Sundance. “But I also think it works hard to uncover where tenderness and closeness can exist in these things.”
She continued, giving a shoutout to the cast and crew. “The folks who came together to make this film have my heart. Pun intended.”
