In those scrapped scenes, Wiig’s down-on-her-luck character couldn’t afford to stay in the same hotel as the rest of the bridesmaids celebrating Maya Rudolph‘s character, Lillian. So what did Annie get up to in Sin City instead?

“She had to stay in a different hotel, and they get split up from the get-go almost,” Mumolo described, divulging Annie eventually “meets a nice gentleman and then has a little thing with him, a little bit of an adventure.”

But the impromptu romance naturally came with a twist.

As Mumolo put it, “Then his girlfriend shows up where they are and [Wiig] gets into a fight with a group of young community college students from Vegas. Locals.”

While the rest of the bridesmaids were relaxing in the spa, “she has a black eye the next morning,” Mumolo shared, adding with a laugh, “She was looking for them bar to bar, meets someone, and then just gets the s–t kicked out of her.”

But with bachelorette party cut from the script, Mumolo—who was pregnant at the time—and Wiig were tasked with coming up with an equally funny plot point to stop the characters from making it to Vegas.

“I did two hours of uncontrollable sobbing and then was like, ‘Okay, we got to go.’ Kristen was in New York, so we got on the phone and wrote the airplane scene, which is one of my favorites by far,” Mumolo said, adding that playful scene was what led to “Stove, and the whole thing.”

Of course, the hard work paid off as Mumolo and Wiig—who also cowrote and costarred in Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar—earned an Oscar nomination for their Bridesmaids script.

Cameron Diaz & Nicole Richie

Nicole, a longtime fan of her sister-in-law’s movies, several years ago took the opportunity to ask her to re-enact a few of her favorite movie scenes, including one from My Best Friend’s Wedding.

“We were in Chicago and I said to her, ‘Cameron, I need you to give it to me. I need you to get behind the luggage cart and run towards me, towards the airport,'” she said on the Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino podcast in May 2024. “I really think like at a certain point, we were driving past things and I was like, ‘Say this. Say this. Say this.’ And she really just let me have it. It was very generous of her.”
