Other Causes of Towel Discoloration
While benzoyl peroxide is the primary offender, there are a few other less common causes of towel discoloration. For instance, rust from old plumbing can leave reddish streaks, but these tend to be darker and irregular. Additionally, a harmless bathroom bacteria known as Serratia marcescens can create pinkish residue, although this can be wiped away during cleaning without bleaching the fabric. Hair products containing lightening agents may also contribute to similar fading.
However, when the marks are permanent and lighter than the towel, benzoyl peroxide is almost always the main culprit.
