Watering Techniques for Healthy Growth

Treat your Christmas cactus like a tropical plant by watering it generously and allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. This is vital to prevent root rot. For those in drier climates, consider placing the pot on a tray filled with water and pebbles to create a humid environment, as these plants thrive in moisture.

Soil and Fertilizer Needs

In their natural habitat, Christmas cacti do not grow in traditional soil but rather in crevices where organic debris accumulates. Therefore, it’s important to use well-draining soil that is suitable for succulents. After the flowering phase, fertilize your Christmas cactus with a quality fertilizer to support its growth.

Encouraging Blooming in Your Christmas Cactus

The stunning flowers of Christmas cacti come in shades of pink, fuchsia, orange, or white. To encourage blooming, these plants require a dormancy period of about four weeks. This can be achieved by providing longer and cooler nights—keeping the plant in darkness for 12-14 hours a day. If a dark spot is unavailable, covering the cactus with a cloth or box can suffice. Additionally, maintaining cooler temperatures between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius will help initiate bud formation.
