The Role of Flavorings and Additives

Flavorings in hot dogs can vary significantly by region, often incorporating ingredients like MSG and carmine, a coloring agent derived from crushed beetles. Notably, the Department of Agriculture does not require manufacturers to disclose these flavorings on labels, which allows for a wide range of undisclosed ingredients to be included in the final product.

Health Risks Associated with Processed Meats

Numerous studies have linked processed meats, including hot dogs, to serious health risks. Research from the University of Hawaii indicates that consuming processed meats can increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67%. One of the most concerning additives found in hot dogs is nitrates and nitrites. These compounds can react with amines in processed meat when exposed to high heat, forming nitrosamines—chemicals associated with an increased risk of several cancers, including bladder, pancreatic, colon, and stomach cancer.

According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, eating just one hot dog per day raises the risk of colorectal cancer by 21%.
