This method is based on a natural principle: water can slowly move through an absorbent material. As a result, the plant receives the moisture it needs without the risk of overwatering, even while you’re away.

The Ingenious Nail and String System

The concept is straightforward and reassuring. All you need is a nail, a natural string (such as cotton, wool, or hemp), and a water bottle. The nail is used to anchor the string in the soil, close to the roots. The other end of the string is placed in a water-filled bottle positioned next to the pot.

Once the string is thoroughly soaked, it transports water slowly to the soil. The plant then waters itself according to its needs, creating a small, autonomous, and silent irrigation system that requires no electricity.

Preparing the System Before You Leave

To ensure the system functions correctly, a few essential steps must be followed. Start by thoroughly wetting the string before installation; a dry string will not allow for proper water flow. Next, choose a bottle suitable for the length of your absence: a liter may suffice for a few days, but a larger bottle is preferable for a week or more.

Insert the nail into the soil a few centimeters from the base of the plant, being careful not to disturb the roots, and ensure the string is in contact with the soil. Finally, test the system several days before your departure to confirm that watering occurs as intended. This precaution will allow you to leave with peace of mind.
