Chronic Condition Management
Lipitor (Atorvastatin): Used to manage cholesterol, its risks include muscle pain or weakness (myopathy), which in rare cases can lead to a serious condition called rhabdomyolysis. It may also affect liver enzyme levels.
Metformin: A primary treatment for Type 2 diabetes. While generally safe, a rare but serious side effect is lactic acidosis, a buildup of acid in the bloodstream that requires immediate medical attention. It is often contraindicated for those with significant kidney or liver impairment.
Mental Health Medications
Xanax (Alprazolam): A benzodiazepine used for anxiety. It carries a high risk for dependency and withdrawal symptoms. It also causes significant sedation, which increases the risk of falls or accidents, especially when combined with other substances that depress the central nervous system.
Zoloft (Sertraline): An SSRI antidepressant. Risks include “serotonin syndrome” if combined with other serotonergic drugs, characterized by agitation, rapid heart rate, and muscle rigidity. It may also increase the risk of bleeding when taken with NSAIDs.
Lithobid (Lithium): Used for bipolar disorder. It has a narrow therapeutic index, meaning the difference between a safe dose and a toxic dose is small. Regular blood monitoring is required to prevent lithium toxicity, which can damage the kidneys and thyroid.
