Indeed, Bridesmaids writer Annie Mumolo—who co-wrote the 2011 movie alongside its star Kristen Wiig—spilled the behind-the-scenes process with producer Judd Apatow that led to one of the film’s most iconic scenes.
“We had a whole sequence where the group did go to Vegas,” Mumolo explained during a June 18 episode of the Julia Cunningham Show podcast. “But because we had started [writing] five years before that [when] we got into development on the movie, all these Vegas movies came out. The Hangover, What Happens in Vegas—there were tons of them.”
Apatow—the creative force behind The 40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up before coming aboard the female ensemble also featuring Rose Byrne and Melissa McCarthy—broke the difficult news to Mumolo and Wiig that their script would require a major change to stand out.
“[Apatow] called us in literally about a month before we started shooting and was like, ‘All right, have a seat,'” Mumolo detailed. “And Judd was like, ‘I’m cutting Vegas.’ It was almost 60 pages.”
