While Johnson shared his kids ultimately “loved” seeing him as Maui, getting to visit their dad on set came with a perk he believes they were even more excited about.

Gesturing to costar Catherine Laga’aia, who stars as Moana in the 2026 film, Johnson joked, “They really just wanted to meet Catherine.”

And Johnson’s children are just three of the fans he gets to share the movie magic with wherever he goes, which the Tooth Fairy actor cherishes as a “cool” part of being a part of the Disney family.

“It’s the wildest thing when I’m out, and I get a chance to meet fans, especially little, little, little ones,” Johnson said, quipping, “The parents are like, ‘That’s Maui!’ And they’re like, ‘That’s not Maui.'”

“Look, my tattoos!” Johnson said he repeats before explaining Maui’s missing curls to young fans with the line, “I shaved my head.”

As for one of the hardest parts of embodying the Polynesian demigod in physical form after voicing Maui in the animated films released in 2016 and 2024?

“The timing of the dance choreography is a little bit more challenging because there’s music involved. It’s singing and making sure that the words and the lyrics are driving the moves and the steps,” Johnson noted. “I have a partner for my number of ‘You’re Welcome,’ which is Catherine, and so there’s a lot happening.”
