I am one happy woman on this fine Monday morning, because I happened to have had a front row seat to Sofia taking her first official steps yesterday. She hasn’t been in any hurry to walk, though in recent weeks she has been walking while holding onto Mauricio’s two hands (as evidenced by the 800 videos I asked Alex to send me.) She’s also been standing up by herself without holding onto anything, which in my memory was a precursor to walking when it came to my kids.
But yesterday, she crossed the rubicon into the wonderful world of walking, and it was kind of unexpected and pretty perfect! Alex, Paige, and I were hanging with Sofia in the kitchen after her nap, and Sofia and I were repeating a trick she’d been doing all weekend. First, she’d stand up all by herself a foot or two away from me and I’d proclaim in my most effusive middle aged Disney voice, “Look whose standing up all by herself!!”
Then she’d do a bit of a forward trust fall into my arms, then we’d do it over and over and over again. Repetition is the highest form of grandmothering!
But after doing that a couple of times yesterday, she had a little glimmer in her eye and I decided to scoot back a few inches more. Then lo and behold…she took one step before the same trust fall! Then we did it again and she took two steps before the trust fall. It was amazing!!
Obviously there was a massive amount of shrieking and screaming “YAY!” and it was the happiest thing that’s ever happened to me. (Grandmas will understand this.) Here’s the video (thanks for filming, Paige!)
It’s all Sofia all the time over here until they head back to Dallas tomorrow. I’ll share more fun moments in the coming days!
